TAKE TIME
By Pastor Tim Hodge
Today was “GRANDPARENT’S BREAKFAST” at my granddaughter’s school. Papa had the date on his calendar before school even started. Yes, I’m the excitable and celebratory kind of Papa. The school parking lot was packed and a line outside the door as grandparents slowly made their way to the cafeteria of Carolina Springs Elementary.
As we stood with our own little kindergartener, Selah, I noticed the cutest little fellow in front of us. He was wearing a little backpack and held a matching lunch bag. As the line moved forward this little tyke didn’t always immediately proceed. I began to pay more attention as to whether the gentleman ahead of him would ever turn around and acknowledge this little guy. The little fella just stood there with no interaction; just staring off into space.
Finally, I’d had enough of his loneliness, so I sparked conversation with him by telling him I like his ‘really cool’ backpack – to which he excitedly showed me his lunch bag matched as well. By this time, we were almost to the food line where you got to choose chocolate milk, cereal, grits, juice, etc. That’s when it hit me: THIS LITTLE GUY WAS ALONE! He was bundling a chocolate milk, a little sealed container of cereal, and something else in his arms as we made our way to the register. I was momentarily distracted while I salted my grits when almost stepped on a pack of Fruit Loops. I looked up at my new-found little buddy and realized he had dropped it. After all, how much can a little kindergartener juggle?
The lady at the register assumed he was with Kim and me. We told her he was not and we all proceeded to help him get his items together. The cashier then got one of the aides to come and assist this brave little guy. That was the last I saw of him.
I stood there with my eyes glazed over with tears. My heart was crushed. I almost had a public meltdown. So much love from the hundreds of grandparents was evident. Yet, here was a little guy who as all alone. My heart broke. No child should be alone like that.
Friends, we all need to check our priorities. Are we majoring on the major things or are we majoring on the minors? For a precious little child to be ALONE on GRANDPARENT’S DAY speaks volumes to me. How many other times is this child ALONE – having to fend for himself? How many people do we have in our lives like this little boy? Will he be alright? Probably. Could his life be accentuated by more support and love from his family? Definitely.
I’m going to lay out a challenge to you: TAKE TIME! Yes, TAKE TIME to look for people in your circle of influence you can encourage. Child, adult, senior adult – it doesn’t matter. Strong, weak, frail – it doesn’t matter. Don’t assume someone has it all together. TAKE TIME to encourage someone. Come on folks, it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference.
