Ninety-Eight-Year-Old Grandmother
By Pastor Tim Hodge
A funny thing happened last week while I was preaching a revival in Laurinburg, NC. The Sunday night kick-off service was a joint event with several churches represented. There was a great move of the Holy Spirit.
I was staying at my in-law’s home during my trip. Tuesday morning, I was sitting in the den while enjoying the quiet when my mother-in-law (Mom) walked in and said, “I need to tell you something funny.” She proceeded to tell me she was trying to keep my wife’s ninety-eight-year-old grandmother from finding out I was in town preaching. Mom knows getting out takes a toll on grandmother’s body and she knew Grandmother would want to go to the revival.
My in-law’s church was one of the churches joining the host church during the kick-off service. One of grandmother’s caregivers was in the service. My father-in-law (Pop) took some items by grandmother’s apartment and he and the caregiver began praising God for the service on Sunday night. They spilled the beans. Grandmother heard them in there talking about it and had a fit no one told her.
So, guess where Grandmother was at Tuesday night? Yes, wheeled right into the house of God. She didn’t care who took her. She just wanted to get to the revival service. Arthritic-ridden body, pain, and greatly immobilized; yet, with a passion to get into the presence of God and fellowship with His people.
Hmmmm. What can we learn from Grandmother? How about this: NO EXCUSES. Don’t let my ninety-eight-year-old Grandmother out-do you when it comes to getting to the house of God. Maybe we can all look at Grandmother and check our own passion level.
