SIDETRACKED / SIDESWIPED JOY… IT’S STILL JOY IN THE END!
By Pastor Tim Hodge
The JOY of the Lord is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Joy may be considered an emotion; yet spiritually it is far more than that. Happiness requires pleasant happenings. Often people confuse happiness for joy. True joy in its purest form comes from the Holy Spirit and anything else is a counterfeit. In our Bible study on THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT we arrived at this definition of JOY: “The full assurance that the gospel of Jesus is more than enough for our salvation and we have an established place in the household of God’s family.”
There are elements of flowing in the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill our purpose, our destiny, our SPIRITUAL D.N.A. (Destined Necessary Accomplishments) that produces great personal joy. Something I had to come to terms with this week was the fact that everyone around me may not be on-board with this excitable essence of JOY that I may be experiencing. When that reality hits, it hits really hard. I’ll publicly admit I didn’t take it gracefully. I was mad, grumpy, snappy, and out-right mean.
That is until…. Yes, until I calmed down from my temper-tantrum and allowed the Holy Spirit to whisper in my heart the reminders that my JOY comes from Him. I was greatly disappointed (majorly disappointed) over a specific situation and I allowed it to sidetrack / sideswipe me. Yet, once my emotions settled and the Holy Spirit spoke into my heart with His calming voice, I remembered my ASSURANCE that this situation didn’t shake my faith and that I AM A CHILD OF THE KING. Everything else will happen in His appointed time and for my good. This JOY that I have comes from Him.
